rearranging the furniture

Last week we rearranged the furniture.

We created a new seating area in the house by moving the dining table into the kitchen area where a sofa had been previously. The motivation had nothing to do with freshening things up and everything to do with moving the 1000-piece puzzle to a more accessible location. It took all of ten minutes to make the change but it has opened up an entirely new space in the house. It is like a breath of fresh air.

During a time when we cannot change our location to gain a fresh perspective it was something as simple as rearranging the furniture that has breathed new life into our home.  Moving furniture around isn’t new for me but since working in interior design I had been so focused on other people’s living spaces that my own home languished.

I have been struggling to find motivation lately to do anything. I start writing. Then stop. It has been hard to find my groove when we are all home together and I get interrupted all the time. And, quite frankly, I don’t know what to say. Everything that seemed so acute a month ago has settled into a quiet, somewhat boring, existence at home. Grocery shopping is a major weekly outing but otherwise it is pretty much the same. The days are long and yet they fly by with seemingly little accomplished.

Something as simple as rearranging the furniture has helped shift my perspective. I needed a tweak in the familiar to activate my mind. And a reminder that during isolated times even though I can’t get up and go somewhere I can still freshen things up.

Wonder what furniture will get rearranged next?
